The SEED Awards for Sustainable Development Entrepreneurial Initiatives are awards granted annually with the purpose of starting a quest to determine those entrepreneurs who, based on a social and environmental commitment, are outstanding due to the commissioning of innovating and promising initiatives, of a local nature in countries with developing or emerging economies. An international jury of experts is in charge of selecting the enterprises with capabilities of implementing real improvements in the area of the eradication of poverty and for environmental sustainability, fostering at the same time a more ecological economy.

Amount granted by the SEED Awards

Different from any other awards, SEED Awards not only include an amount of Money granted. The experience acquired with the work done with entrepreneurs having a social and environmental responsibility has shown us that, quite often, their companies require both theoretical and practical knowledge, and especially of contact networks and financial support. SEED responds to this need by offering the winners a package of support services personalized for their companies.

Although the support service package given to the winners is exclusive and it is inspired, to a large extent, to the needs presented by each company, the associated award to SEED Awards includes:

- assistance and advisory in the development and improvement of the entrepreneurial and financial plan for the initiative;

- an entrepreneurial education workshop, lasting three days, during which key elements and factors to be taken into consideration when created a committed company with social and environmental aspects will be included as well, and also those related to gender equality; participation in a high level international award ceremony with the attendance of government officials and UN staff, developing institutions and companies;

- high level diffusion of the initiative within a regional, national and international scenario;

- access to institutions, agencies and enterprises, including both winners and students of SEED, as well as strategic partners, collaborating entities and associated entities to SEED;

- a financial contribution of US$ 5.000 dollars to cover most pressing needs in the company, in whatever form is agreed between the winner and SEED;

- The awarded companies with the Gender Equality Award will also get legal assistance from the International Legal Office Hogan Lovells, which has been offering for some years now free advisory services to companies from all over the world under the leadership of women.

An example with all the information regarding the concrete support given by SEED to a winner can be found here.

Through a Project with funds coming from the EC funds , SEED awards will continue placing a special interest in Africa. The objective is to consolidate the scheme implemented in South Africa, and to center efforts in other six countries of the continent: Ethiopia, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Uganda.

Also, SEED has started cooperation with the German Federal Ministry of the Environment, Protection of Nature and Nuclear Security. This cooperation will allow to grant ten SEED Awards for Reduced Emissions, to companies having a significant contribution to mitigation and/or adaptation to climate change in Colombia, India, Tanzania, Uganda and Vietnam.

Thanks to the support by the Government of Flanders, three SEED Awards will be granted to companies with offices in the South African provinces of Free State, Limpopo and KwaZulu Natal.

The SEED Awards 2013 to Gender Equality, with the sponsoring of UN Women and ONUDI and with the support of Hogan Lovells, will be given to those companies placed in the hands of women, or with women leadership and will give priorities to the attainment of gender equality and/or to the strengthening of the role of women in the working environment.
