In a sanction that will leave its imprint in the history of justice process followed for serious crimes done by the dictatorships in the region, former general José Efraín Ríos Montt was given a sentence of eighty years in prison for his responsibility in the genocide and in crimes against humanity that took place in the period between April 1982 and August 1983, period in which he was ruling in Guatemala. Court A of High Risk revoked his home arrest and determined that he is to serve the sentence at a common prison. The former chief of intelligence José Mauricio Rodríguez Sánchez was set free.
