Barely two years remain before the 2015 deadline for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), yet it has become painfully clear that many of the targets set out in the MDGs will not be met. With dialogue already underway on the form and content of a successor framework, it is imperative that a more effective sustainable development paradigm be agreed, one that avoids the pitfalls of the current process. While proposals on specific goals and targets are beginning to emerge, the global debate is currently centered on the principles and broad parameters that should underpin the new framework.

There are conflicts which expose realities. The Indigenous Territory National Park Isiboro Sécure (TIPNIS) is one of them. The government from the multinational state of Bolivia and the indigenous communities of TIPNIS has been immersed for several years now in a rather complex battle. The former in an attempt to build a strategic road which will serve the interests of one of its main “partners”, Brazil. The latter in a resistance to avoid this political, environmental and cultural aggression.

Through an inter-institutional Alliance among the Permanent Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDH), the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OACNUDH), the Joint Program of United Nations on HIV/AIDS (ONUSIDA) and the Inter-American Platform on Human Rights, Democracy and Development (PIDHDD), the implementation stage of the Project “Training, education and awareness creation of legislators, officials and public agents on HIV/AIDS starts in the cities of Guayaquil and Quito”, with the support of the Parliamentarian Group for the Rights of Women at the National Assembly of Ecuador.
