Description: Preparatory meeting for the International Year of Family Agriculture (AIAF 2014).

Representatives of small producers from Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Bolivia will meet starting today in this capital city to plan the activities for the International Year of Family Agriculture, (AIAF 2014).

This meeting will last until Friday January 25 and its main objective is to define a program of activities to hold the International Year of Family Agriculture (AIAF 2014), declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 22, 2011.

Worried about climate change, the reduction of food production and food security small agricultural producers will meet to undertake actions as a block.

The main objective is to request from our countries, governments and institutions a greater attention for the productive sector, especially to small traditional agricultural producers, as it was informed by Carlos León, president of the Integrating Committee of Peasant Economic Organizations (CIOC) from Bolivia.

At present, small Latin American producers are organized in the Confederation of Family Producer Organizations from Expanded MercoSur. Bolivia is represented through CIOEC in its condition of representative of the Indigenous and Original Peasant Economic Organizations, a development economic model, as it was explained by Leon.

According to the words of the official, the intention is to foster actions allowing the creation at world level active policies favoring the sustainable development of small producers and their families.

Likewise we intend to create awareness among the population on the contribution the small producer might do not only in the supply of food items but also in the rescue of our ancestral knowledge and the care to be given to Mother Earth, he added.

The International Year of the Family Agriculture 2014 is an initiative promoted by the World Rural Forum and supported by more than 360 civil and peasant organizations from all continents.

The fact it is held at a world level intend to be transformed into a tool for the promotion of active policies favoring sustainable development of the agrarian systems based in the peasant, communal, indigenous, cooperative and fishery family unity.

All these seen from the perspective of the efficient struggle against poverty and hunger as well as in the quest of a rural medium based on the respect to the environment and to biodiversity.
