After deliberating the problems faced by the migrant workforce-dominated population in Tirupur knitwear cluster, the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-organised public conference held here on Tuesday passed a resolution seeking government intervention to enhance infrastructure and medical facilities.

A major requisition that emerged out was the plea for enhancing the facilities at the District Headquarters hospital and convert it into a super speciality hospital by appointing adequate specialised doctors.

“Most of the migrant labourers in the textile sector are dependent on government-run medical institutions for their healthcare needs,” CPI (M) district secretary K. Kamaraj pointed out.

House rent

Expressing concern over the abnormal rise in house rent in Tirupur over the last few years, the CPI (M) wanted the State Government to construct houses and hostels for textile workers. “For the houses, the government can levy a minimal rent and put a condition that the house will be transferred to the name of the respective workers after a stipulated period.

“This type of incentive will help the industry retain the workers who, otherwise, might return back to their native towns because they are at the moment spending almost 30 per cent of the wages on house rent alone,” Mr. Kamaraj said.

Water scheme

Some of the other demands that emerged out of the deliberations in the event include speedy implementation of the fourth drinking water scheme, mandatory weekly holiday for the textile workers, and setting up of engineering and medical colleges in the government sector in the district.

CPI (M) state secertary G. Ramakrishnan and MLA (Tirupur South) K. Thangavel were among those who addressed the meeting.
