INDIA: Inaction in gangrape case sparks protest in Bikaner

BIKANER: Activists of social organizations and political parties along with large number of people staged a protest in front of Bikaner district collector’s office on Tuesday against inaction on the part of police as the prime accused in a minor girl’s gangrape case is still out of police’s reach. People from all sections of society participated in the demonstration.

A memorandum was handed over to district collector Arti Dogra demanding stern action against the accused and his accomplices. It has been alleged that police is trying to dilute the case under the influence of the accused.

Accomplices of the accused are threatening the family of the rape survivor of severe consequences if the case is not withdrawn. It was also alleged that keeping the police aside, one of the prime accused Mehboob Kayamkhani surrendered in the court, while the other prime accused Farid alias Rajiv is still on the run. A memorandum was also given to SP Santosh C Chalke.

City Congress President Yashpal Gehlot, BJP Youth Wing President Bhupendra Sharma, Lalit Bhan, Mohan Surana and members of various industries’ associations including Gulab Gehlot, Vikki Chaddha, Mani Shankar, Harikishan Bhati, Jatin Yadav, Naresh Chug and various other participated in the demonstration.

Meanwhile, police presented Mehboob Kayamkhani in the court amidst tight security and obtained five days’ police remand. CO City Mamta Gupta told TOI that now Kayamkhani will be presented again in the court on October 18. Gupta added that SP Santosh Chalke and other senior police officers personally quizzed him to know the whereabouts of other accused Farid alias Rajiv. She said that medical examination of Mehboob Kayamkhani was conducted on Tuesday morning.

SP Santosh C Chalke told TOI that the statement of the rape survivor has been recorded on Tuesday before the magistrate u/s 164. He said that 10 teams have been formed to nab the other prime accused Farid alias Rajiv.

According to police sources, parents of Farid alias Rajiv have gone underground fearing police interrogation. Brother-in-law of Farid alias Rajiv was called to Kotegate police station on Tuesday for quizzing to know the whereabouts of Farid. He later alleged that police tortured him with third-degree formula and he is being treated at a hospital. He alleged that police has seized his passport and visa.
