LAHORE, Jan 23: A large number of Punjab government employees took out a procession and demonstrated in front of the Civil Secretariat here on Jan 22 to press for their demands.

The rally was organised by the All Pakistan Clerks Association (Apca) and the demonstrators dispersed peacefully after an assurance by the chief secretary that their demands would be met soon. The rally was taken out from the AG Office.

Speaking to the employees in front of the Secretariat, Apca Punjab President Haji Irshad Chaudhry said the government was not accepting their demands despite repeated assurances.

He appealed to the government to do the needful without any delay otherwise the employees would stage protests all over the province.

The demands included merger of the entire ad hoc relief into basic pay and their revision accordingly, house rent as per the current basic pays, 15 per cent increase in salaries, upgradation of clerical staff as per the ruling by the ombudsman, and 20 per cent special allowance for all employees which was announced by former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.

Other leaders urged the workers to prepare for the Feb 6 and 9 rallies and the March 5 sit-in in front of the chief minister’s secretariat.

The protesters dispersed after an Apca delegation called on the chief secretary who said he would soon send a summary of their demands to the chief minister for approval. He also promised another meeting with union leaders within a couple of days.###
