More than 2000 employees have been recruited to the Department of Railways by former Minister Dullas Alahapperuma and the present Minister of Transport Kumar Welgama on several occasions on a substitute basis. Despite their period of employment has exceeded four years, they have not been made permanent in the service jeopardizing their employment and livelihood.

When they entered the Department on a substitute basis they had been already employed but gave up those jobs assuming that the employment in the Department of Railways would be permanent and pensionable.

There is an attempt to deploy these employees in the Minister’s son’s election campaign like it was done during the last elections says the General Secretary of All Ceylon Railway General Employees’ Union Sumathypala Manawadu.

The General Secretary of All Ceylon Railway General Employees’ Union condemns the attempt to deploy the employees in election campaigns and states the Union will commence a programme of struggle to get the employees’ jobs permanent in the Department.###
